United Kingdom’s Stewardship Code
The UK Stewardship Code aims to enhance the quality of engagement between asset managers and companies to help improve governance and long-term risk-adjusted returns to shareholders. The Code lays out best practices and is overseen by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC). It applies to institutional investors and, by extension, to service providers and investment consultants.
At Partners Capital, all our actions are conducted with our clients’ best interest in mind. In this regard, we firmly believe that effective stewardship is of vital importance to promote the long-term value of our investments and thus, to ultimately enhance the investment performance for our clients. Effective stewardship includes a focus on long-term success, a clear division of duties, provision of transparent information, and an alignment of interests. Therefore, we support adoption of the Stewardship Code by our third party asset managers and adhere to the principles of the Code in our own business activities.
The goals of the Stewardship Code reflect our long-term investment approach of seeking coordination of shareholder interests with the actions of management. In line with the Code’s principles, we ensure a fair and transparent allocation of the limited capacities for some of our best fund managers to all our clients. When possible conflicts of interests arise, we rely on strict policies to safeguard that our clients’ interests always come first and we expect the same from our asset managers.
When selecting third party asset managers, we establish whether their approach is consistent with the principles of the Code. For example, we actively favour managers with a long-term perspective of sustainable shareholder value creation and we only invest client capital in funds with transparent reporting. Partners Capital does not generally invest directly in equities, but we do encourage robust stewardship policies at our third party managers, including shareholder activism where appropriate and clear policies on voting.
Past results of Partners Capital’s pooled investment vehicles or investment strategies are not necessarily indicative of future results.
